Domain strategy
For accounts with a custom domain name, there are two approaches to handling the domain during the transition: keeping your current domain or changing to a new one. VaultMe for Admins supports both scenarios.
Domains have to be managed through your domain service provider. VaultMe for Admins will not transfer the domain or domain settings.
Keep the domain
If you choose to keep your existing domain, you will need to verify your ownership of the domain in your Microsoft 365 account.
It is possible to verify the ownership of the same domain in Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 at the same time. Only one platform can send/receive mail for that domain at any moment, but you can still create destination user accounts using the exact same email addresses as your source users. VaultMe for Admins supports migrations between identically named accounts as long as the source and destination are hosted by different providers.
Cutover happens when you switch MX (and related DNS records) to Microsoft 365. Until then, email continues to flow through Google Workspace. After the switch, new email flows to Microsoft 365 while already-migrated content remains intact.
We generally recommend changing the MX records before or after the migration, although most administrators choose to do so after. Changing the MX records during the migration is not recommended.
You can also stage users in Microsoft 365 on a temporary onmicrosoft.com domain, complete migrations, validate data, and then point MX to Microsoft 365 and attach your primary domain. For instructions from Microsoft, see this article: Add or replace your onmicrosoft.com domain.
VaultMe for Admins does not provide support for domain management. If you need help setting up or verifying your domain, consider reaching out to your domain service provider.
Change the domain
If you’re rebranding or consolidating, you can migrate users from user@old-domain.com to user@new-domain.com. VaultMe for Admins supports mapping from one address to another.
If you choose to change the domain, you can purchase it through your preferred provider. The domain must be purchased before you set up a migration.
